Gents,
I recently had a discussion with a friend about the concept of separating emotion from action, a struggle faced by most of us! Simply put, there are times when you don't feel like heading to the gym or cold-calling 100 potential leads, yet these tasks still need to be done!
Many men (including myself) wait for the emotion in order to act. “I don’t feel like it, I’m tired, I’m not excited enough, I’m not motivated”. However, as men pursuing excellence, this is not the way forward. Men of excellence roll up their sleeves and jump into the fray, regardless of their initial hesitation or discomfort.
We must do the hard shit regardless of feelings! Taking care of your family, starting a business, climbing the corporate ladder, maintaining good health, assisting others, or self-education. There is no waiting for the right emotion or “motivation” to act.
Consider the mindset of the top 1% of performers. I don't believe they operate based on fleeting emotions or an inconsistent motivation surge. Honestly and selfishly, I want us all to be part of that 1%!!!
I admit that I struggle with this as much as anyone. However, whenever I'm reluctant to tackle a task, I remind myself to "separate the emotion from the action". I repeat this to myself. This phrase has become a valuable cognitive tool, especially during periods of low motivation. Emotion and action are two distinct forces, and we've been mistakenly taught to combine.
I'm sharing this mantra in the hope that it serves as a powerful catalyst, helping you reach your goals and needs.
Stay Excellent,
